As I read rule 3.8.3 the two primary sheet winches can not exceed a 30:1 ratio. The Harken B32.2 has a maximum power rating of 32.2:1. Based on what I've seen and what is advertised by JBoats the Harken is now standard equipment, yet they exceed the rules specifications.

Am I misinterpeting the rule or some amendment to them? I am considering replacing my orginal primaries (Enkes) and want to make sure what I get meets the rules.

Thanks

You need a current copy of the rules - posted on this web site. A printed copy is in the works but always follows approval of changes by a few months. The rule that you are quoting has been changed.

The change made to rule 3.8.3 effective Feb. 1, 2007 is:

"3.8.3 Two primary sheet winches positioned on deck between the mainsheet traveler and the aft face of the forward end of the cockpit well with a drum diameter not exceeding 76mm. "

This change was made to bring the rule into line with currently available winches and remove the confusion that occurred with the B32.2 depending on whether an 8 inch or 10 inch handle was used.

Lorne, thank you for the correction. As an aside, I got read the ruling off the J24 class/usa site, which still is posting the 2005 rules.

Thanks again.
