I raised this idea in the Maintenance forum, but wanted to see if there would be any unforeseen rule compliance issues that I may not have thought of. My idea was to attempt to build a custom traveler support bar from epoxy and carbon fiber. The idea mostly would be to simply get something more stylish than the slowly decaying wood traveler support bar, but also to provide a (hopefully) less expensive option than commercially available traveler bars, which range in price from $150-$200USD. The rule which I found that applies to this is as follows: 3.8.2 One mainsheet traveler track, positioned as indicated in Plan A. The traveler track support may be of any material and shall not weigh less than 1kg. Am I safe in assuming that by this rule we're free to do whatever we want with the traveler bar, using whichever commercially available materials we want, provided that they stay within rule 7.1.18, which prohibits the use of Titanium? While I don't think it would be practical to build a piece that would weigh less than 1kg whilst retaining sufficient strength for the task, I assume that the "shall not weigh less than 1kg" refers to the support bar alone, and not the complete assembly of support bar, traveler track, and associated mounting hardware? Thanks! Eriks The Black Pearl CAN 4136 |
