Is it normal to have water build up above the keel? I assume that is the bilge or lowest point in the boat so that's where it all collects. The owner advises that the boat (kept in the water currently) needs to be pumped out about every five trips out. I don't know enough about the boat to know if that is just water leaking in from the mast or...?

On the boat I'm looking at, they mounted speed/depth transducers BEFORE the keel...is that absolutly ridiculous or not that big of a deal?

I noticed on a few J/24s that I looked at that none of the hardware has backing plates, only washers. Were they built that way?

Is it structurally damaging to the deck to have an excessive amount of unused holes in the deck? It seems some hardware was moved all over the place like five times, leaving about 15 holes per side in the deck. They are filled with epoxy, it's just ugly.

Thanks,
Michael

my boat takes in water on the toe rail as well as the mast. Just don't have time to fix it. the hull should not be leaking. If it is you have real problems. pull the boat and check where the keel seats to the hull. Also my boat has been raced hard for 29 years. I am trying to preserve it until I can paint it. counted 200 holes in the deck.

Michael,

After a complete deck overhaul I still get water in the bilge - upholding the J/24's reputation as a "wet" boat.
I think a fair amount is coming in through the mast. The real way to know is to simply hang out inside your
boat with a flashlight during a good rain storm.

A large enough washer can be good backing if the deck gadget doesn't experience a lot of force.

I think that in most cases, small holes in the deck are not, by themselves, structurally challenging.
However, the moment water comes in through any hole and reaches the balsa core... then you
have a serious problem. So, make sure all holes are completely sealed.

And... through-hull sensors before the keel are pretty standard for all the J/24's that I've seen.
