Hi,
Can you tell from a sail number the year a J/24 was built? I'm not sure if I can make rhyme or reason out of it. I was assuming the lower the sail number, the old the boat. There are many boats for sale proving me wrong. Why is this? Can you shed some light?
Is a sail number given by the class or the builder? Does a sale number transfer with the boat?
Thanks,
Craig

1-yes, if you know some hull numbers around..
2-the sail number/registration number should be in the hull number, there were several posts on how to decode these numbers which contain the sail number and the year/month
3-sail number is given with the license to the builder who incorporates it into the hull number
4-from the above: the official sail number transfers with the boat (hull).
as with every one design class, sails are more often changing owners than hulls, and race committees don't always play police when out of convenience the hull number and the sail number don't match
