Since there's not too much variety in the choice of materials from which to build a J/24 Genoa from, I was wondering what kind of luck people have had, specifically comparing sails from Quantum vs. UK Hallsey's tape drive? Is the durability similar or better with one vs. the other? Shapes just as fast? (assuming you're capable of sailing to a consistant potential), bang/buck? etc? Besides exploring the obvious used route, I'm trying to find a relatively cost effective way to update the sail inventory from the Dacron Genoas I've got right now... Thanks! |

| Since the last post got so many responses, I'll try too. I am a new J24 owner (me new, not the boat) and I am looking at buying sails for racing. My current set is pretty worn out. Please share your opinions on good makes and models of sails. North Sails, UK Halsey (Texas), Quantum??? |

North Sails, UK Halsey (Texas), Quantum??? **************** Hi guys, I am a North Sails ( Newports) guy. I have very little experience with other lofts sails other than what I see during races. Perhaps that is why this post has seen so little response. Most of the guys tend to stick with one maker and our experience is therefore limited. In the fleet of boats I race in there are Norths, Haarsticks, and Quantums. Under the right conditions we are all fast ( some of us just not as smart as the others!) I use Norths because the fastest guys in my fleet use them. All I want is to at least be racing even with them. The rest of it is boat handling and tactics. My own thoughts on the Norths are that they set up easy and are fast right out of the box. There are several boats flying Haarsticks; they are at least as fast as the Norths in moderate air. They look to be made very well and have excellent finish and detail. The Z sails guys also make a great looking sail and are also extremely fast.( Don't forget, they just won a championship two months ago.) I have no idea of what the UK sails look like. As far as durability goes, all sails get beat up if you do enough races. The Genoas take the biggest beating. Consider what happens to the sail whenever you tack. We make it a point to hand guide the genoa across the boat every time we tack. This saves some wear if you are consistent. I tell my guys not to mark up the front of the mast. Genoa cringle marks on the front of the mast are a giveaway your foredeck is not helping the sails around. We make it a point of pride to have a relatively unmarked mast. Besides that, its faster. If you are looking for better pricing, try contacting your local lofts for used sails. Some of the top guys sell their new racing sails after every event since they likely get new sails for every important regatta. If the last regatta was light to moderate conditions, you can get a great deal. Ask the guys in your area what they use and why. Most are happy to share their thoughts on sails. Look at tuning guides for every sailmaker - all available on the internet - and see how they are designed to be set up. Most sailmakers also have trial suits of sails they might loan you to try. Ask! and thou might receive. Also, this forum always has ads for used sails. Take a look around and you should be able to find a deal. Maybe rephrase your questions and ask what guys think of their own sails. Begging your pardon but you both sound like newcomers. Welcome to the class and have fun! This is a great class and a great group of people! |
