I wasn't sure where to post thi, so it is also posted under: Forums > General Interest > Sails and Tuning I have submitted a request that the class allow an increase in the power ratio of the vang, and am starting this topic to see what others think of this idea. I did not request a desired new power ratio, but left that open for discussion. I think at least 12:1 would be desirable, and 16:1 would be very easy, because adding one cascade block to an existing 8:1 setup would create a 16:1 power ratio setup. Quotes from the Class Rules: 1.1 The J/24 is a one design class created to fulfill the diverse needs of recreational sailors such as cruising, one design racing, day sailing and handicap racing. These rules are intended to preserve important design characteristics: ease of handling, low cost of ownership, safety, comfort, and the one design nature of the boat. 3.5.4 Running Rigging d) One kicking strap (vang) of synthetic rope of not less than 8mm diameter in a tackle not exceeding 8:1 power ratio. A wire strop of not less than 4mm diameter or synthetic rope strop of not less than 8mm and not more than 305mm in length may be used to connect the kicking strap to the attachment bracket on the mast. I think this change would increase safety and ease of handling (as stated in 1.1 above), and that adoption by any team would be optional, and could be done at very low cost. I would be interested to hear what others think. Thanks, Stephen USA 2842 |
