Hello all,

Question about Rule:

4.1.8 A minimum of one throwable lifesaving device with sea anchor attached within reach of the helmsman and ready for
instant use, attached to the pushpit or inner side of the transom.

How do people conform to this? ...and why don't I see any evidence of Lifeslings or such in any photos?

Thanks,

Pierson

Pierson,

Please check out the new version of the Class rules (find them under Class documents, under Organization). 4.1.8 was cleaned up and clarified - just needs to be within instant reah of the helmsman. No attachment specified (which was a pain in the butt).

In practice does this mean that it's been lying in the cockpit around the skippers feet? ...with a sea anchor attached? It would seem to be more pactical to mount it on the push pit, but I just don't see any in photos or in the local fleet.

At what level of competition do rules like this get rigorously enforced? Would it be grounds for protest if another boat doesn't have a sea anchor attached to the throwable Type IV PFD?

Pierson,

Mine has always laid on the floor of the cockpit, aft against the inside of the transom (with a ridiculous line attached to the pushpit). You might say its at the skipper's feet. Never had a problem with it. If it was in the way, it would mean that I am sitting too far aft. Also - I have a JimBuoy horsehoe with a built in sea anchor (www.jimbuoy.com/pages/marine/horseshoe.htm), so the sea anchor isn't an issue.

I have seen some boats with the horsehoe against the pushpit. Can't do that with mine as it interferes with the tiller.

I'm happy to be rid of the stupid "attached" language. Hypothetically, anyone falling overboard would be left aft of a moving boat. The helmsman is the person farthest aft on the boat (and likely closest to the person in the water), thus in the best position to toss the throwable. It wouldn't work so good if the helmsman had to "detach" the throwable before throwing it (more elapsed time before deploying the throwable to the person in the water.)

As far as enforcement - we are a one-design class. My boat is equipped to meet the Class Rules whether its racing a club race or the North Americans. With most of the equipment items, you only have to equip once to the Class rules and your good to go. I'm sure there are some casual racers out there that don't meet all the Class Rules, and I doubt that someone is going to protest over a Class Rule in a club race. However, if you make the effort to comply, then you never have to worry about getting protested over your equipment regardless of where your racing.

For day sailing, my horseshoe (with sea anchor) strap is over the tiller. Out of the way yet easy access to throw. I also have a rarely carried man-overboard pole and strobe for night races.

Turn throwable horseshoe with drouge upside down at transome, a piece of shockcord between the port and stbd backstay "padeyes" will hold it in place and out pf the way, but allow for quick access.

I keep moving my bracket. Today now that I have the back stay in, that I have to move the support again. Using nylon tie wraps makes it easy. It is mounted on the starboard side of the push pit. I do however see the practical feature of just having it rest against the transom with the throwing line attached and the throwing line attached to the stern push pit.

The issue shouldn't be who is going to need it but if you do how fast can you get the pfd to the person before you gibe or come about. It is ashame that common sense should be a class rule (whether it is enforced or not).
