I am interested to know if anyone has a reliable safe technique for stepping the mast without using a crane. Holding it still while dropping it into cabin is an issue.

Steven,
A Gin Pole is probably what you are after for those locations where you do not have a crane or mast hoist available. You can make a Gin Pole quite easily or buy one that is pre-fab from Hall Rigging (www.pyacht.com) item # HALJ241065 for a cost of about $289.95. If you would like some pictures of the the Gin Pole that I have fabricated, let me know.

I was forced into a not very safe or reliable techniques but it worked. I had 4 helpers off the boat (2 on eather side). 2 held the fore and back stays. the other 2 held 2 halyards. They were dispersed fore and aft to stabalize the mast from the top. Then one guy was in the cabin and 3 lifted the mast out of the deck hole. Once the mast was on the deck we lowered it "Iwogima style" whcih though scarry worked pretty well. I really prefer the mast crane though.
