Can someone please tell me where to look on a J24 for the hull ID number, and how to decipher it to extract the actual hull number and the year of manufacture?

I'm involved in the possible purchase of an old J24 and I need that info for boat registration in our State.

Thanks,
Neil

The HIN is on the transom near the water line on the left side. The number will look something like the following

TPS249701178

the "TPS" is for Tilliston Peason
the "24" is the model (i.e. J24)
the next set of numbers is the hull number (i.e. 970) this may be from 1 to 4 digits long depending on what number it is.
the "1178" are the month and year of construction (i.e november 1978)

BAHHH wish you could edit posts!

I meant the HIN will be on the "Right" or Starboard side

I cant do 3 things at once today for some reason!

You can also look under the teak threshold at the companionway entrance. It should be molded into the fiberglass. However, it's only the hull number, not the manufacture date or build location.

From looking at J/24 HIN's around Lake Lanier, GA I've seen 5 different J/24 HIN formats:

1. Original:
Ex: TPS241401177
Means: TPS = Tillotson Pearson
24 = J/24
140 = Hull Number
1177 = manufacture date (Nov '77)

2. Original with 4 digit hull number - I've only seen one of these...
Ex: TSP2410381278
Means: TPS = Tillotson Pearson
24 = J/24
1038 = Hull Number
1278 = manufacture date (Dec '78)

3. Shortened original - removed "2" from model number for 12-character HIN
Ex: TSP419271279
Means: TPS = Tillotson Pearson
4 = J/24
1927 = Hull Number
1279 = manufacture date (Dec '79)

4. Marine industry date format #1 (before Aug 1, 1984)
Ex: TSP43004M82B
Means: TPS = Tillotson Pearson
4 = J/24
3004 = Hull Number
M82 = 1982 model year
B = September

I decoded the date format using this: http://dan.pfeiffer.net/p26/sn.htm
A August E December I April
B September F January J May
C October G February K June
D November H March L July

5. Marine industry date format #2 (after Aug 1, 1984?)
Ex: TSP44449J788
Means: TPS = Tillotson Pearson
4 = J/24
4449 = Hull Number
J7 = October 7th (?)
88 = 1988

I decoded the date format using this: http://boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm
JAN A JUL G
FEB B AUG H
MAR C SEP I
APR D OCT J
MAY E NOV K
JUN F DEC L

Starting in 1985 I see some HINs going back to format 3 - but with some unexpected date values
which may not mean what I think they mean. Ex. TSP439701485 - hull #3970, 1985 (I assume),
but the "14" isn't clear - maybe it's "I4" for format 5.

Of course, several coats of paint can make a reall mess of reading these numbers... :-)

Can anyone from the factory comment on this information?

Thanks for all the great info, Rich.

For your Version 5: according to other systems I've seen post-about 1986 ... if the last 4 elements are, say, J788, that would mean
J=Oct (using the A=Jan, B=Feb, etc, system)
7= last digit of the boat's BUILD year (1987)
88= last two digits of the boat's 'MODEL year' (1988)

Like automobiles, boat builders start producing the next 'model year' during the last 3-5 months of the current calendar year.

Thanks for clarifying that Neil!

I was pretty much guessing that the '7' meant the 7th of October... :-\
