PROPOSAL:
Life Jackets or personal buoyancy equipment for each member of the crew. Weight not to be included on the Inventory list.

CURRENT POSITION:
Life Jackets or personal buoyancy equipment for each member of the crew.

REASON:
1) To simplify the Rules

COMMENTS:
The proposed change to Rule 3.7.3 eliminates the need to weigh life jackets or personal buoyancy equipment, and makes this proposal superfluous.
The Technical Committee, Designer & Copyright Holder recommend against this proposal.

Life jackets must be carried and they must be weighed in the inventory. That makes weight saving execises pointless and encourages carriage of the highest quality equipment . Encourage this carriage by continuing to weigh the jackets.

I agree with Chris McLaughlin on this one - by weighing the jackets and including them in the inventory you dont penalise anyone for investing in the best possible self inflating devices.

I believe the intent of this change is to keep the boat legal w/o a change in your onboard inventory list everytime somebody comes on to crew with a different personal flotation device. From what I've seen of the effect of weight on the performance of the J/24, the minor differences in the weight of personal floatation devices would have virtually no impact - therefore no incentive to cheapen equipment.

I should add that this would effectively be covered in rule 3.7.3

Tim,

On Hedgehog as owner I take personal responsibility for safety.

We have five gas inflation life jackets, serviced each year and left on board at all times. if a crew member wants to remove one and wear their own, usully solid cell buoyancy - they can do so at their own risk. It doesn't negate the need to weigh the life jackets in beforeany major competition and its a 5 minute job with a spring balance to include them in the inventory. We are trying to reduce the weight of the boat without compromising safety. Hence the European wish to weight the jackets in.

My response is on behalf of 12 of the 23 polled Lake George - Fleet 24 members. The majority response is . . . to not change the rule. Discussion: Agree with the Technical Committee.
