NOTICE OF RACE
2008 J/24 DISTRICT 12 SOUTH SHORE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
AND
DISTRICT 12 WORLD QUALIFICATION SERIES
FOR THE 2009 J/24 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
1. Invitation
District 12 of the United States J/24 Class Association (“USJCA”) invites you to participate in the 2008 J/24 District 12 South Shore Championship Series (SSS). The Series consists of five (5) different regattas within District 12’s geographical region from May through October. The 2008 Series will determine the District 12 World Championship Qualifier for the 2009 J/24 World Championship. USJCA District 12 and the host yacht clubs of the regattas are the organizers and hosts, respectively.
2. Rules
The Series will be governed by the rules as defined in the 2005-2008 Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS), the prescriptions of US Sailing, the Class Rules of the International J/24 Class Association (IJCA), this Notice of Series, and the Sailing Instructions for each regatta. In the event of a conflict between the Sailing Instructions of an individual regatta and this Notice of Race, this Notice of Race shall govern. A committee consisting of each District 12 Fleet Captain and chaired by the District 12 Governor will convene to resolve disputes relating to the scoring or results of the South Shore Series or disputes relating to the determination of the helmsperson receiving the Qualification for the 2009 World Championship. As a qualification series for an International Class World Championship event, the Series and each regatta is designated Category C pursuant to Appendix 1 of the RRS Appendices (Section II), as modified by the IJCA Class Rules.
3. Eligibility
3.1 General. The Series is open to all J/24 yachts, as defined by the IJCA. Competitors must meet all ownership, class membership, and boat measurement requirements, and must have paid the series entry fee before beginning official competition in the Series.
3.2 Measurement. Class Rule 2.5.3 shall be modified to allow a completed Yacht Measurement Form Part D in lieu of a current Measurement Certificate. A Measurement Certificate or Yacht Measurement Form Part D, and the Inventory of Required and Optional Equipment shall be completed and available. Boats may be checked at any time during the Series for compliance with class measurement rules and required and optional equipment inventory.
3.3 Helmspersons. Owners and helmsperson must be members of the USJCA and must maintain their primary residence within the geographical region of District 12. Helmspersons that maintain their primary residence in a District that is neither District 12 nor a District that is hosting a World Qualifier for the 2009 World Championships may compete in the Series for world qualification purposes, but shall not be eligible for the South Shore Series trophy. If there are to be co-skippers, one must be designated as the primary helmsperson for World Qualification purposes and comply with IJCA Rules with respect to the responsibilities of the primary helmsperson, including driving during the start and first leg of each race.
4. Entry
An entry for the series is complete when the entry fee of ten U.S. dollars ($10.00) is received by the District Governor. All proceeds will be used to cover prizes for the series and District 12 mailing expenses.

6. Racing
At least five (5) races are scheduled for each regatta in the series. Racing will take place on Windward/Leeward courses, or variations thereof, and may include gates and offset marks.
7. Scoring
7.1 Method for Series Scoring. Scoring will be determined by the low point scoring system, RRS Appendix A, as modified herein. Only regattas that complete three (3) or more races will constitute a “Scored Regatta” for purposes of the South Shore Series. A boat’s final overall position in each scored regatta shall be that boat’s Series score for the subject regatta. A boat’s final overall Series score will be the total of its four (4) lowest overall positions in scored regattas. A boat, therefore, will have two (2) throw-outs if there are six (6) scored regattas and it competes in all six (6) regattas, and one (1) throw-out if there are five (5) scored regattas and it competes in all five (5) scored regattas. There will be no throw-outs if there are four (4) or fewer scored regattas. If a boat does not compete in a series scored regatta, that boat shall be scored a DNS for that regatta and will receive a score of the number of boats entered, plus 1.
7.2 Unpaid Entries. A boat shall be scored DNS for each regatta until it completes the Series entry requirements set forth in Sections 4 and 9 of this Notice of Series.
7.3 Weigh-In. As a World Qualification Series, all boats must comply with Class Rule 5.1, which establishes a total crew weight limit of four hundred kilograms (400 kgs. or 881.8 lbs). Each crewmember of each boat must weigh-in on the District 12 scale during registration for each regatta. A boat shall be scored DNS for each regatta that it fails to meet crew weigh-in requirements.
8. Prizes
A 2009 J/24 World Championship qualification spot will be awarded to the primary helmsperson placing first in the Series. If this helmsperson has previously been awarded a qualification spot, then the top non-qualified helmsperson will be awarded the spot.
The District 12 South Shore Championship Perpetual Trophy will be awarded to the highest placing boat in the series whose primary helmsperson maintains their primary residence within the geographical region of District 12. Additional prizes will be awarded to boats placing first through third in the series, and additional prizes may be awarded, depending on the amount received in entry fees.
