Rule 6.1.9 allows use of electronic devices to measure speed.

Rule 8.15.5 does not allow use of GPS, or similar positioning devices.

Does this mean that you can use a GPS during racing to calculate speed?  Meaning you just can't use it to calculate VMG?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Additional comment:

The key word is “use” of position device.  My interpretation is it is not illegal to have a GPS on board during racing.  So I can have a GPS onboard and calculating speed during racing.

Isn't this pursing of the meaning? Don't you think that boat owners should have and be able to use a GPS..... afterall GPS's are pretty common on...

For safety reasons, at Dana Point our coastal random leg and point to point race SI's specifically allow J/24s to use GPS.  I have also found it quite useful to compare the GPS speed with knotmeter speed to detect currents - probably just the sort of thing that the GPS prohibition is about.

I think the rule is pretty clear: you can't use a GPS while racing! I don't think the spirit of the rule makes a distinction between using it for speed thru the water, VMG or SOG. Remember, by the very nature of GPS, you can't tell your true speed through the water anyway. I think it is an outdated rule, to tell you the truth, and would support it being changed. As far as I am concerned, we have a GPS on board for safety reasons and actually used it to find the course when we were fogged-in during J-Fest in Long Beach a few months ago...and then put it below when we found the line, of course!
