I have a 1978 J with the old spreader system. The port spreader got caught under the crain when I lifted the boat and bent down. Is the thru bar better and is it hard to install? Or where can I get the old style parts?

There are quite a few places to get the old style spreaders as well as the "thru-bar". The "thru-bar" is a much better set up for the mast and is not difficult to install (maybe 30-45 minutes). You can check for spreader parts at APS, Hall Spars or even here: http://www.rigrite.com/Spars/Kenyon_Spars/Kenyon_One_Design/K_J24_mast.htm.
Good Luck.
