Does anyone know what the thickness of the plywood under the aft stantions is? and balsa? I'm doing some repairs and was curious. I'm doing the repair from inside the boat...any recommendations on doing the repair this way?
Thanks,
Clay

there are many ways to support the stantion base below deck although the best that I have seen and done on my boat is with a material called G-10 from www.mcmaster.com
This material can be ordered in a flat sheet at any thickness and size that you desire. It is a fiberglass composite that is easily cut with a carbide blade to fit into the appropriate location below deck. It is very strong and not easy to break. As for drilling out the existing stantion screw holes, care should be taken there as well since this is an area that will tend to leak and then you have a balsa recoring job to do down the road. I redrilled the holes larger and then filled the holes with epoxy. Once dry, I took the proper drill size for the stantion bolt and drilled that through the epoxy core. You can take a small v-tool and make a reservoir on the top deck skin where the bolt will fit. This reservoir as well as the hole will hold the sealant (ie., 3M 4200 or 5200). Stick the ss bolt through the stantion and hole and have someone below guide the bolt through the pre-drilled G-10 material, put a good size flat washer (ie., 3/4"diameter) with a self locking ss bolt and tighten down. This will ensure that you have a good stantion base through the deck along with a good sealed joint that you won't have to go back and fix. Probably a little more detail than you wanted, but this works well. Perhaps someone else has a different method.
