I am new to J-24's and need a battery for our boat (2249 Who'Wa).  Currently there is just a small rechargable battery that when fully charged, the navigation lights dim if you turn on the cabin lights (battey weighs just a few pounds).   We are just racing the boat, mostly in daytime so we usually only need the battery for the Sail Comp and depth gage and running lights if the race runs into dusk, but out little battery is coming up dead each week.  We would like to be able to sail one overnight race which would require running lights all night long.

West Marine has a AGM battery that has a 32 amp-hour rating ($109).  Is that enough Amp hours without having to remove and recharge the battery every week.  Is a marine AGM battery needed or overkill for the boat?  What are other people using?

Thanks

I have the same battery. I like it because it is small and completely sealed. Keep in mind that a J24 has a very basic electrical system and wasn't designed for a ton of accessories. If you want amps, you will have to accept the trade-off in increased weight. There is plenty of information on the internet about how to size a 12 volt DC electrical system. I use a solar trickle charger on a daily basis to keep mine topped off and when I use it for a late night harbor cruise and really run it down, I pull it off and put it on a real charger to bring it up. I glassed two small wood blocks (coated with epoxy to make them waterproof) onto the hull next to the mast step. I screwed a pad eye in each and place the battery between them with a line run through the eyes to hold everything securely in place. -Pierson
