I recently acquired a new North San Diego genoa. which came with dire warnings about the damaging effects of folding, and a storage bag which is not long enough to store the rolled sail without folding the clew over. This probably sounds like a real dumb question, but is there some secret O.K. way to store this sail in its bag. Does it really matter?

With 2 people fold the sail about at about top batten level, then roll up the sail from that fold.  Keep it tight and it will roll and store well.  Rolling with the sail folded over makes it easier because it's 2 layers which is stiffer and it rolls faster because you've reduced the length to roll.  Try it on all sails.

Just remember to make sure it is DRY, bone dry, when you store it rolled. The mylar is impermeable to moisture--so if there's any moisture on it at all (like the kind that a dry sail will pick up from the grass when it's being rolled up) it will get trapped in the sail and you might have a mildew problem when you take it out of storage a few months down the line. This happened to me and now my nice new genoa is on it's way to being a "club racing" sail. I now loosely "fold" it up and store until I need to transport it to a regatta. -pierson
