I have just purchased a J24 that is missing the starboard V berth cushion. I am looking for an old one to keep me class and PHRF legal for this summer and then intend to replace them all next winter . No intention of actually sleeping on it(or getting it to match). New cushions are one too many projects this year as she is currently getting the decks re-cored and upgrading all the hardware. So does anyone have an old one good for one season??? I am located near Niagara Falls. |

John,
You don't need to race with the cushions to be class and PHRF legal. I don't know of anyone who races with them in the boat. |

| I don't know about the Jboat class rules as I am a new J24 owner but my understanding is that for PHRF you must have the entire interior in place, tables and cushions included. Most guys recognize that you will remove cushions in a regatta if they might get damaged ie taking down the spin in the forward hatch and I know lots of people race without them. Are the cushions on board when the boat is measured? I seem to recall reading somewhere the cushions have a specified thickness. Anybody able to quote the rules on this one |

John,
As far as I know from my limited knowledge of PHRF, the rating is based on a One Design configuration of the boat. Under OD rules for the J24, the cushions are optional, and need not be aboard while racing.

Hi John, Welcome to the J/24 Class!!! As for the cushions, they are not on the boat when it is weighed "dry". Everything is taken off the boat for the "boat weighed dry" weight. Once this weight is established (min 1270kg) then eveything is placed back onto the boat. This includes your required equipment such as the outboard motor, anchor, first aid kit, bucket, etc.
All the required items are weighed independently and noted on the "Inventory of Required & Optional Equipment" form. These values are then added to the dry weight and must equal a minimum of 1345kg. This is known ar your "All-Up weight for racing" weight. You will need to include some of the "Optional" items to get your boat up to weight. The cushions are considered an "optional" piece of equipment. If you include them in your All-Up weight then they would need to be on the boat for One Design racing. Most people choose not to include the cushions because they are so bulky and can be annoying if they are on the boat while racing. You are not limited to the optional items that are listed on the form. You can have a stereo, port-a-poty, extra line, etc. as long as the items you have listed on the sheet are on the boat, you are legal.
I hope this helps... Here is a link to all the measurement forms and rules. http://www.j24class.org/Organisation/ClassDocuments/tabid/57/DMXModule/383/EntryId/4/Default.aspx |
