I'm in Los Angeles. ...or does anyone know where I can find an 18 foot aluminum tube for sale? McMaster-Carr doesn't carry them.

Best thing to do is find one locally (i.e., used mast that can be cut is ideal). To ship a pole to you would be more than buying one. Hall Spars used to sell pre-fab gin poles for about $250. I have 25' pole with base plate that I fabricated with all of the blocks sitting on the side of my house (our club finally sprung for a mast hoist) that I do not use any longer that I would give you, but again shippng it from Colorado to LA would not be worth it.

You're right Steve--it's just easier to make one...which I did this past weekend. I found the aluminum pole here: http://www.mkmetal.net/ They are located in Gardena, CA, so I was able to pick it up myself. The 20' section was less than $50--the expensive part is all the hardware!

Does anyone have any photos or ideas about how to rig one up?  I've only used a gin pole for a deck stepped mast before & want to benefit from the experience of the group.

Jean: I bought a 20 foot section and cut it down to 18.5 feet. I borrowed a 16 foot pole once and it was barely long enough. Another fleetmember has an 18.5' section and theirs seems to be perfect.
