I have bought a 1980 (Hull#1700’s) with the standard rigging. I live behind a low 8ft bridge and would like to make tabernacle system that would still meet the class rules. As far as my reading of the Rig Measurements it seems the Shear Line is close to the deck and not below. If is true then I should be able to install a step at the deck. Has anyone attempted this before? I have already modified a 1985 O’ Day 222 with forward stepping system using the boom stabilized with a bridal and Main Sheet to lower the Mask and then lay down the boom on the Safety Line. I can do it single handed with little trouble. Do to the poor upwind performance of the O Day I would like to go with a fixed keel boat like the J24. Thanks in advance, Emmett

I am pretty sure it would not be compliant for one design racing and also pretty sure it would not be competitive. The sail shapes are designed for and the tuning guides all assume the mast will be thrust forward at the deck to setup enough forestay sag and lower mast pre-bend. You should be able to race PHRF without a hit because you haven't changed any measurements but you will have lost a lot of the tuning and sail shape body of knowledge.
