| Any secrets for keeping the boat moving upwind in a drifter? I've followed the tuning guide -- backstay and cunningham off, outhaul eased 2", scallops in the luff of the genoa, weight to leeward, genoa 6-8" off spreaders and shrouds, traveler up and boom centered, shroud tenion 20 and 15. We do OK, but not great. Wondering if anyone has other tips for keeping air moving across the sails. |

A CLEAN bottom is a must! Make sure the leech of the main is open, top tell tail streaming if you have that much air. I use a simple bungee between the topping lift and the boom cord to lift the boom and open the leech. If the air is to light, the weight of the boom will close up the leech. I'm not sure if this is legal in class racing...? anybody? Light air will stay attached to flatter sails easier than one with lots of draft. don't try to sail, high fall off and get the boat moving, boat speed is everything. good luck Jimmie |

Sadly you may not use bungee in this or any other way. It is prohibited by the Class rules! Try the following: Rig super slack, genoa cunningham slack, cars forward, mast heel in aft position for pre-bend, one or two crew below deck sitting in the lockers or under the mast depending on point of sailing. main traveller to windward, backstay off vang off. Sheet genoa wide, foot and keep flow attached , only point when you have momentum.Cockpit man inside the hatch when not rolling the boat, bowman stays to leeward on tacks allowing the genoa in before sliding under the foot but staying to leeward until speed builds. | Backstay turnbuckels off as far as they will go. Rig tension as loose as you dare - 5 on the uppers and lowers. |
