hi, a question for the technical committee: many boats have put an aftermarket piece stainless steel bar (e.g. APS part SED 0554081 or SED0554121) along the aft edge of the cabin top to protect it from wear from the jib sheet when it's run aft from the jib fairleads to the genoa fairleads. a previous owner of my boat had mortised a curved stainless plate into the aft edge of the cabintop at that point to serve the same purpose. the wear patterns show that it's really working (around the edges the fiberglass is heavily worn, the stainless is polished shiny but
otherwise intact)

I happened to meantion this to Roberto Authier (manufacturer of the argentinian J24s) and he thought it was a great idea and would like to do it as a standard feature. but since it's not a traditional feature, he's not sure it's legal. it seems like a harmless enhancement that makes boats last longer and doesn't change their speed at all.

the way to do it (I think) would be to lay an appropriately curved piece of stainless steel into the appropriate spot in the mold and lay up the rest of the deck over it. it'll take next to no work to do it this way, and less than a dollar's worth of stainless.

so: does he have permission from the technical committee to do this?

there are some australian boats that have made some realy sexy looking little wear strips out of carbon fiber that are about 8 inches long and fit the curve of the back edge of the deck just outboard of where the jibsheet wears those grooves into the deck. it probably wont last as long as stainless, but it really is an eye catcher at the dock - makes it look like you cared alot for your boat. one of the sailors down under makes them.

Since so many boats have already done this , the benefits are very clear and have nothing to do with speed, I see no reason to restrict it. Whether it be carbon fiber or stainless, or almost any other material I can think of, I don't see a downside.

A rule change to permit the use of wear strips of any material is being submitted to the 2006 World Council meeting August, 2006.

Our boat already has them. Better make them legal!

Carbon Wear Strips are great, as we make them. We have a set of molds and can supply them to anyone. I also would like to make carbon deck protectors for all the blocks. Similar to the FARR 40 boats.

My response is on behalf of 12 of the 23 polled Lake George - Fleet 24 members. The majority response is . . . in favor. Discussion: Agree with the Technical Committee.
