Current rule:
The sail shall have four battens. The top batten shall be not more than 610mm in length; the
intermediate battens shall be not more than 990mm in length; and the bottom batten shall be
not more than 740mm in length. The maximum width of the battens shall be not more than
50mm.
h) The distance
Proposed rule: The sail shall have 4 battens. The top two battens may be any length. The third batten from the top shall not be more than 990mm in length. The bottom batten shall not be more than 740mm in length...........
Reason for change, extend sail life, maintain sail shape over longer period of time.

A single full length upper batten was open for discussion during the 2008 changes for sails re the genoa. Some of the negative comments on full length upper battens were that it would get caught on the backstay tacking and really wouldn't do much for the sail life. Sailmakers told us they could retrofit existing mains for $100 - $125. Some told us the life would be extended in their opinion. Why not get a used main modified with what you propose and do some testing, take some pictures and see if support builds for the idea.

A further comment - posting a proposed rule change to the forum is a good idea to initiate and carry on a discussion. This should lead to refining the proposal if that's needed. Hopefully we can attract those who had something to say last September and October will contribute. Formal rule change proposals are not gathered from the forum. They should be mailed/emailed to the chairman of the International Technical Committee to get into the change process system. Thanks Lorne Chapman Chair, ITC

I have used a modified main as described for 8 months now. Some comments: 1. The main that I modified was old. It brought an old main back to life, and it is MUCH faster than it was. I think this shows that it will extend the useful life of the mainsail. 2. It has made the boat much easier to sail in the upper wind ranges. It flattens out up top as the breeze increases due to the full battens 3. Light air has not been an issue yet, WRT to the battens catching on the backstay.
