Hi, I'd like to install a magnetic compass on our J24, could anyone recommend me from his/her experience a compass which could be installed on mast bracket and would be clearly readable by the helmsman? I would prefer a compass with tactical card, but readability is a first priority. (I'm asking about magnetic rather than Tacktik Micro because I've heard that the latter has non-replaceable batteries) Thanks, Igor

Hi Igor,
For what its worth, When I first started sailing my boat I used a Suunto B116 msgnetic compass. they are built well and readable under most conditions. At present I use an old fashioned Sailcomp. If you can afford it, the tacktic micro you mentioned is compact, removable and easy to use. I think most boats are using them presently. Not sure about the battery replacement issue. Maybe someone else here can speak about that.

I have an old flat faced TacTic that has never failed but the newer one on the Hobie 33 has had to go back for batteries. The KVH Sailcomp that came with the boat had to have the brain rebuilt but is accurate and reliable.
