2007 Annual Easter Regatta, April 5-8
Wednesday, February 28, 2007 (185 reads)

What a historic year this will be! The Columbia Sailing Club celebrates its 50th birthday by hosting its 40th annual Easter Regatta and by sailing the regatta for the 20th year in J24s. To make the celebration more special, Easter Regatta this year is the J24 Southeastern Regional Championship and a qualifying regatta for the 2008 World Championship in Porto Rotondo, Italy. With the US National Championship in Jacksonville just two weeks after Easter Regatta, this will be an ideal chance to stage your boat and crew.

If all of that is not reason enough to be here, then consider this: CSC members voted last week to demolish the old clubhouse and build a new one. So, 2007 will be your last chance to savor the shabby warmth of the old clubhouse, which will be bulldozed immediately after the regatta. If you’ve been here before, you’ll want to return this year to relish that old experience before we give you a new clubhouse in 2008. If you’ve never been here before, you have to come this year to really understand why J24 sailors have looked forward to this regatta for over 20 years.

Midwinters Start in Tampa
Saturday, February 24, 2007 (219 reads)

The first day of the 2007 J/24 Midwinter Championship provided some interesting races and a long postponement.  The day started out great with 12+ knots out of the north, but the breeze started to die at the end of Race One, resulting in a waiting game for the race committee and competitors.

The breeze came back at 7-10 knots for Races Two and Three and then faded below 5 knots.  The RC sent the competitors home after 4:00 pm.  While several protests kept the Jury busy and the results on hold, the competitors had a good time enjoying a steel drum band and enormous crawfish boil.  Open taps on the kegs kept most happy, although the daily awards were postponed until Saturday evening.

Malcolm Gefter sailing Gizmo held a two point lead over Robby Brown on Preparation J.  Tony Parker on Bangor Packet was close behind in third.

Tampa, FL - Robby Brown and Preparation J sprinted to the top of the leaderboard with a 5-1-1-7 in the four races sailed Saturday.  Tony Parker and Bangor Pack moved into second with a 2-3-13-2.  The Zaleski brothers sailing Twins had a much better day with a 1-2-5-3 to move into third position.

Nearly two-thirds of the fleet is sporting some sort of scoring penalty in this no throwout championship, making it difficult to catch Brown and Parker who have sailed clean so far.  Racing concludes on Sunday with two more races scheduled.  Pleasant 70 degree temperatures and winds less than 10 knots are forecasted.
