Insider's Scoop - On site report from J/24 Worlds

USA 1892 (Bow 44) helmed by David Klatt ended up first at the weather mark and led the fleet around the course, followed closely by last year's defending World Champion Mauricio Santa Cruz on BRA 37 (Bow 51) who took 3rd.

The wind picked up to 9-11 knots for Race 2 and sailors were well-behaved and managed to get a clean start on first attempt.  Judges were on the water to watch the exciting mark-roundings, as many of the boats struggled to get around the 2nd weather mark and its offset.

Race 2 was won by USA 2274 (Bow 40) Mark Hillman, followed by USA 1208 Mike Ingham who sailed a 7th in the first race.  Santa Cruz sailed a consistent 3rd, giving him the overall lead for Day One with a total of 6 points.  The day ended with 4 protests resulting in DSQs and 3 issues conceded to 10 point scoring penalties (SCP).

Sponsor Scappino, whose clothing was featured as the official gear of the regatta, hosted a party at Nikki Beach (in Marina Vallarta).

Day Two-Tuesday
Shifty winds and a lot of wave action made Day Two a tough one for the race committee.  The first race saw a 30 degree shift favoring the pin end of the line in the 10 to 12-knot breeze as they attempted to get off the start of Race 3.  The general recall only added insult to injury as there were many collisions, forcing USA 3843 (Bow 38) to retire,
essentially taking Keith Whittemore out of regatta contention with a hole in the starboard side near the primary winch.

The second attempt at a start under black flag was blown off and an 80 minute postponement ensued until the wind settled in from the South.

Race 3 was won by Wataru Sakamoto aboard JPN 5179 (Bow 63), followed by CHI 5224 (Bow 61) and ARG 4677 (Bow 06).

Winds for Race 4 stayed the same; the north south course orientation made it great for spectator viewing with the sun setting behind the numerous spinnakers running down to the leeward marks.  Race 4 was won by Maricio Santa Cruz BRA 37 (Bow 51), who with only 15 points through 4 races, is clearly emerging to defending his title.  Chris Snow on USA 5208 (Bow 23) had a good showing with a 5th and 2nd for the day and only 4 points behind Santac Crz in overall standings.

The racers were greeted by loud music and many spectators as they entered the breakwater-a Volleyball Tournament was held on the beach in front of the host resort Paradise Village.  24 protests kept the jury busy into the night; the jury started again at 8:30AM the next morning.
