How to take care of that hole in the water in which you pour money

I am about to block my mast using spartite. I plan to spend a lot of time getting the mast to Max J, and on the same plane with the keel before the pour.

Never having used spartite, I have a couple question & hoped someone might know the answer:

Do I set up the mast with my sailmaker’s recommended pre-bend before the pour? This would require some sort of small block on the aft side of the mast — with this small block becoming encapsulated in the spartite.

Alternatively, I could get the mast to max J with no bend — then add the pre-bend after the spartite cures.

I didn’t know if the spartite would allow for the bend.

Also, I understand that you can use tape to allow the pour to be above the partners & thereby creating an integrated cap. How thick should this top be in order to be solid/durable.

What is done with most of the J24′s?

Any other recommendations regarding the spartite installation are appreciated.

I am doing the same this weekend and have the same questions. I have used spartite before and would think 1/2 inch would be a strong cap.

I don’t think you need to prebend the mast to pour your Spartite (I didn’t). Half inch is a good thickness for the cap above the partners. I wrapped the mast with 4 mil poly to keep the Spartite out of the groove and allow it to slide off the mast. This job requires just over one Spartite kit, or you can add a block of something pressed into the mix in the big section in front of the mast to raise the level to what you want.
