Important information on the format of the event below. Represent Your Country in International Competition! 1-10, 2003 The
J/24 has once again been chosen as one of a select few sailing classes
to participate in the Pan American Games to be held in Santo Domingo,
Dominican Republic in August, 2003. Based on our strong performance
at the recent J/24 World Championships, the U.S. has qualified to compete
in the Games. To fill the available berth, the U.S. Olympic Committee,
US SAILING and the U.S. J/24 Class have set up a trials qualification
system to be held on January 4-6, 2003 at the Key Biscayne Yacht Club
near Miami, Florida. Exact
details on the team format and other technical issues are being developed
now by the Pan American Sailing Federation. That information will be
distributed as soon as it becomes available. Following is a list of
information that we now know. Dates: January 4-7, 2003. Registration Jan. 4, Racing Jan. 5-6. January 7 is a reserve day. (See NOR) Location: Key Biscayne Yacht Club, near Miami, Florida Format: Fleet racing (not match racing as in the past) Team: Four person teams. Open to male and female. Sails: All Class legal sails allowed. (i.e. Genoas and Jibs). Crew Weight: 320kg (704lbs.) Fees: There will be a reasonable social fee charged to cover hospitality. Eligibility: Open to U.S. citizens only. No exceptions. Drug Testing: Participants may be subject to testing for banned substances. Winning Team: The winning team must remain the same for the finals. Substitutions are granted for emergencies only. No exceptions. Funding: According to the latest information available, the trip to the finals will be fully funded including: "travel, boat shipping, food, lodging, etc. There will not be additional grants given for training, for example, but all expenses are paid." Future Success: The last guy from the U.S. to skipper a J/24 in the Pan Am Games went on to win a silver medal in the Olympics. You could be next! |
