The wood in the front is marine plywood... wood that is trim is teak. The teak should be oiled. I just bought a 24 also and redid all the teak and plywood. I painted the plywood white... you can varnish it if you like... personal preferance. The teak should be cleaned (I took all of it off the boat and used amazon one step teak cleaner) Then I coated it with 4 coats of interlux hand rub effect varnish... looks really good. You can oil it if you like. I prefer varnish as it protects the wood from UV rays and doesn't absorb dirt as oil can.
I just recently purchased a J24. The boat is in good shape structurally...but
it does need some work. The interior hatch covers, under the bunks, appear to be
original
and have no finish or oil on them. Should I varnish, oil, (maybe
even Thompson's water seal) them. The two that are joined in the v-berth are
finished with varnish or polyurethane, but they don't appear to be the same type
of wood. Also the trim around the cabinet doors and other int. trim appear to be
pretty dry. Do they need some type of maintenance? This boat is an '85 and has
sat for at least a few years on a trailer. Thanks for any help. Jim <
