Stanchion Backing Plate

G10 is great stuff, but 1/4" is a tad overkill at the J24 level, UNLESS your deck region has been compromised at that area. It is available in various thicknesses, we typically do backing plates 3/16" or even 5/32", and if an above deck mounting pad is needed, 1/8". It is relatively expensive, heavy, and will eat up your bandsaw or jigsaw blades, but it bonds easily (epoxy based hi-pressure laminate) and can be finished off to match the boat. As an alternative, if you have an old J24 or J22 sliding hatch section around, cut it up for backers. Works OK.

I think most people are using G-10 prefabricated fiberglass sheets about 1/4" thick. I'll bet Waterline Systems will sell you some. Info@Waterlinesystems.com

I would like to know the best way to make a backing plate for the aft stanchion bases. The previous owner of my boat used 1/4 inch plastic, but they didn't hold up well, and I can't seem to find any to replace them anyway. Can I make some out of fiberglass, or should I buy them from TPI? If I do make my own, what's the best way to make a template? TIA
