| J/24 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP July 18 - 24, 1998 Day 1 Results |
| San Francisco July 19, 1998 J/24 Worlds, Day 1 San Francisco Bay lives up to its windy reputation. Argentinean G. Baquerizas excels. The first race of the 1998 J/24 Worlds was sailed in typical SF Bay wind but it was untypical clear and sunny. The wind at the 1100 warning signal was 220 at about 14 knots, by the end of the race the wind had shifted to 215 at about 20. The eager fleet pushed the line and the patience of Race Officer Matt Jones to 3 general recalls before the fleet got off to a start with only 3 or 4 boat over early. Jones is using an unusual starting proceedure where the signal boat is above the line and he displayed the general recall flag for only 1 or 2 minutes. When a significant increase in velocity sent most foredeck crews scrambling to swap to the jib. Baquerizas quickly found a lane to the right side of the course and hit the first shift and never looked back. By the end of the second leg they were 10 boat lengths ahead of Brun and Hutchinson and they extended another 10 boatlengths on the second sausage. The top 4 boats stayed the same all the way around. Larson was 4th. This is an impressive top 4 of J/24 sailors who have all done extremely well in the past. Baquerizas was in the top 3 in 1993 and 1997. Brun is the defending 1997 World champ. Hutchinson has been in the top 5 twice. Larson won in 1996. In fifth was Keith Whittemore, an amateur from Seattle. Sixth was Chris Snow from San Diego, sailing one of the oldest boat in the regatta. Hull #241 is one of 3 boats in the regatta built in 1977. Jay Miles from Newport RI deserves a good break. While launching his boat on Saturday the spreaders were bent on the crane. While replacing the bent thru bar the new piece was installed up side down, so the job was done again to correct. At the start of todays race the bail on the boom for the boom vang broke and then while rounding the weather mark the bottom gudgeon on the rudder broke. This failure forced them to withdraw. The boat is now fixed and the crew is eager to prove their bad luck is behind them. Milessa Purdy on hull # 533 was the only other boat to withdraw, a broken boom on the forced leg ended their day. The regatta has drawn 64 teams from 13 nations to the St. Francis Yacht Club. The regatta is scheduled to have 9 races and will end on Friday July 24.
