| J/24 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP July 18 - 24, 1998 Day 2 Results |
| San Francisco, CA, USA July 20, 1998 Another helping of San Francisco Bays best breeze but the sun left us. Two races were sailed today in wind from 14 kts at the start of the first race to 25+ in the second race. Wow, What a day. The sky was overcast most of the day and the temperatures were much closer to the expected chill of SF Bay. The amazing thing is that 61 of 65 boats finished the second race in those demanding conditions. The other amazing thing was that both races were started without any general recalls, the first race today had a "all clear" starting line. Both races were about 7.7 miles and were completed in about 90 minutes. Chris Zaleski of Stamford CT won race two (1st race today) in impressive fashion. Second was defending champion Vince Brun. Third was Ken Kaan of HI, the top amateur in that race. The second race today was won by 1996 World Champ, Chris Larson who managed to pass Main, JPN 4584, in the last leg. Main had lead around the first 4 legs. Third in this race was Seadon Wijsen, a local San Francisco sailor. In this race Terry Hutchinsons (in third after todays racing) red spinnaker was seen in the bottom half of the fleet and actually managed to climb back to finish 6th and maintain his position in the top 3. The top 4 after todays races are the same as yesterday, but the order has changed some. Top US amateur is Keith Whittemore, who finished 5th and 20th today, and is now in 7th overall. The bad news is that 2 sailors were taken off boats with injuries. One Canadian fellow banged the boom with his head and fell overboard, he was quickly recovered by Rum Line sailed by Scott Greenawalt of Oklahoma City. The other was a British woman sailing on Duncan Pierces boat who banged her head during a jibe and 10 minutes later was nearly unconscious. She was transferred to a RC boat, delivered to paramedics at the Berkeley Yacht Club and taken to the hospital. The good news is both are fine, headaches, but otherwise healthy. Boston area sailor Karen Lynch (one of 2 women helmsmen in the regatta) reported today that the second run of the second race "was the fastest and the most fun Ive ever had on a J/24." "This is fun, this is really really fun. I told my partner on the phone there is nothing Id rather be doing." is the report made by Keith Whittemore in his daily call to the office. Two races are scheduled tomorrow. The start of the racing will be at 11:00am. Results can be found on the StFYC web site. www.stfyc.com |
