| San Francisco July 21, 1998 Brun Takes a Commanding Lead in the J/24 Worlds Defending Champion Vince Brun of San Diego continue his winning ways today with finishes of 1 and 3 in todays races for a net gain of 3 points on second place Terry Hutchinson of Annapolis, MD. Brun now leads the regatta with 13 points, Hutchinson has 22. In the first race today Brun played the shifts up the first beat to open up a commanding lead at the first mark. By the 4th mark he had a lead of nearly 2 minutes, and he coasted to an easy victory. Today's racing started at 11 am in an unusually light shifty breeze on the Berkley Circle. The wind was only blowing 10 knots at the first start today and the shifts were HUGE, 10 degrees or so. The course was aggressively managed by StFYC race officer Matt Jones. In the first race today he changed one of the 2 weather legs after the start 10 degrees to the right. In the second race which started on a bearing of 220, he changed the 3rd leg to 210 and the final leg to 200. An argument broke out amongst the Race Committee about whether the mark should have a black band and after the second change. This writer doubts that this RC has ever been forced to change the course so much in July on the Berkley Circle. (The preceeding paragraph has been presented with tongue firmly in cheek) In the second race today the fleet broke its record of 3 perfect starts by charging the line early twice before a successful start sent the fleet off on the third try. A puff during the first attempt to start sent fordeck crew scrambling to change to the small jibs. In this it was Hutchinson who, starting near the pin end, hit the first shift and popped out to a lead which was never seriously challenged. Grimaldi, from Chile, and Brun circled the course in lock step finishing second and third. Dave Klatt from So. California made a guest appearence in the top 4, besting his next best finish by 22 places! The fleet remained amazingly failure free again today, only one gear failure forced a boat to withdraw. Ken Kaan, Honolulu, HI, retired from the second race when the bottom pintle on his rudder failed. One race is scheduled for noon on Wednesday. Nine races are scheduled for the regatta and a discard will be allowed after the 7th race. |
