| San Francisco, CA, USA July, 23, 1998 Brun Leads Going into the Final Day Defending Champion Vince Brun survived an individual recall today and carries a 6 point lead over '96 Champion Chris Larson going into the final race. Brun was called On Course Side of the line in today's first race, returned to the start, putting him in last place and fought his way back to 16th place. Then in the second race today he had a dogfight in the front of the fleet with Terry Hutchinson all the way around the course and finished first. Yesterday evening the jury had a marathon hearing on a protest between Brun and Hutchinson. Hutchinson was disqualified. I'll try to post the facts found on this protest later. (See below; WM) Mathematically only three boats can win the regatta, Brun, Larson and Hutchinson. To win, Larson must finish 10th or better, Brun must finish 6 places worse than Larson, and Hutchinson cannot beat Larson by 3 or more boats. For Hutchinson to win he must finish 7th or better and beat Larson by 3 boats and Brun by 9. Tomorrow's race will be interesting, to say the least, since it is hard to cover 2 boats at once. Today's racing was held under SUNNY skies! in 12-18 kts of steady wind. Both races today had multiple General Recalls and the second race of the day was finally started under a Black Flag. 3 boats fell victim to the dreaded Black Flag, Purdy (USA), Baquerizas (ARG) and Reid (CHI). Two boats broke rudders today, Perkins (USA) and Ahlstrom (SWE). The ninth and final race of the regatta starts at noon tomorrow. Facts found in protest between bow 58, Brun, and bow 59,

CONCLUSION. The preponderance of evidence is that 58
initially gave 59 room to keep clear. DECISION. 59 is DSQ. RRS 10 and 15.. |
