I took these photos of some different stanchion bases in my J/24 fleet during the summer of 2000. Fish Lips, USA 2966, has a custom stanchion base that combines a large mounting pad with a socket that a stanchion fits into. The stanchion is secured in the socket with pre-stretch or Spectra, not set screws. The pictures of the new-style TPI big-base stanchions were after an install on a 100-series hull number, Ho'omele, USA 133. A fiberglass plate was used topsides, and a polycarbonate cutting board (cut into backing plates) below to add structural integrity. - John Fracisco, john.fracisco@mindspring.com
